back to Awards & NomineesThe Inspiration Awards - Hilary Lister

Hilary ListerIn her teens Hilary Lister was diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), a progressive neurological disorder. At 36 Hilary is now quadriplegic and can only control her body from the neck upwards.

When Hilary was introduced to sailing in 2003 it transformed her life. In 2005 she made history by becoming the first quadriplegic to sail solo across the English Channel. Currently Hilary is mid way through a solo sail around the UK.

To control the boat Hilary uses a ‘sip and blow’ system with three straws. Money raised will go to other disabled sailors.
